“Remi & Nneoma” is a moving contemporary adaptation that reimagines the timeless biblical story of Ruth and Naomi through the lens of widowhood, resilience, and unwavering love in modern-day Nigeria.
“Remi & Nneoma” is a new Nigerian film that premiered in cinemas across Lagos on 26 June 2026. I attended the premiere at EbonyLife Cinemas and enjoyed watching the characters come to life on the big screen. The film, inspired by the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, offers a moving contemporary adaptation of one of the Bible’s most enduring narratives of love, loyalty, and redemption.
In the original story, Ruth, a young widow, chooses to leave behind everything she knows to remain by the side of her widowed mother-in-law, Naomi, who has been left alone in the world. Her unwavering devotion becomes a powerful testament to selflessness, resilience, and the transformative grace of caring for others.
Directed by Lyndsey Efejuku and produced by Bikiya Graham-Douglas and Solate Ovundah-Akarolo, Remi and Nneoma stars Bisola Aiyeola as Remi, the modern-day Ruth, and the legendary Liz Benson-Ameye as Nneoma, the film’s Naomi. Through their compelling performances, Remi & Nneoma explore the realities of widowhood in Nigeria, shedding light on the cultural expectations, social stigma, and daily hardships many widows face.
At its heart, the film is a poignant reminder that compassion, perseverance, and unwavering faith can triumph even in life’s most difficult seasons. It celebrates the strength found in human connection and reinforces the timeless message that endurance and kindness are always ultimately rewarded.

The importance of a film like “Remi and Nneoma” in our society
The film begins with a familiar landscape: a family is seated around the dinner table, eating, laughing, and sharing smiles and love with one another. Suddenly, the family’s patriarch clutches his chest, collapses, and is rushed to the hospital, where he later dies. Before the family has the chance to process their loss, tragedy strikes again as Nneoma’s two sons are killed in a fatal car accident on their way home from the hospital.
The film presents an exceptional portrayal of a Nigerian funeral, capturing the traditional attire, customs, and procession with authenticity and care. These moments are handled with sensitivity, evoking the emotional weight of loss and the communal nature of mourning in a way that will feel deeply familiar to many Nigerian viewers.

Convinced that God has forsaken her, she throws away her Bible and retreats into sorrow, unable to reconcile the loss of her husband and two sons. It is Remi who refuses to leave her side, choosing instead to become the steady source of comfort her mother-in-law desperately needs. Like Ruth in the bible, she remains steadfast in her commitment, even when her parents urge her to choose a different path.
However, Remi’s Yoruba parents repeatedly plead with her to return home, reminding her that she is still young and has the opportunity to rebuild her life. They even attempt to reconnect her with an old friend, believing a fresh start is the best way forward. Their concerns reflect the difficult choices many widows face as they navigate family expectations, cultural traditions, and the uncertainty of beginning again.
The film’s thoughtful portrayal of Nigerian customs, traditions, family dynamics, and cultural practices reinforces why stories rooted in local experiences remain among the most interesting in contemporary Nigerian cinema. By creating an authentic portrait of everyday life, it leaves viewers with a lasting emotional and cultural impression.

A nuanced portrayal of grief

“Remi and Nneoma” via Five 2 Media As Remi slowly starts to rebuild her life, she befriends Hachikaru, played by Bikiya Graham-Douglas, whose warmth, humour, and encouragement provide moments of lightness amid the film’s heavier themes. Her friendship reminds audiences that healing often begins with the support of others.
At her new job, Remi meets Ovundah, played by Ifeanyi Kalu, the film’s modern interpretation of Boaz. A widower and owner of a large farm, Ovundah is navigating the challenges of sustainability when Remi offers practical solutions that quickly earn his respect. Their growing connection is tested by his operations manager, played by Uche Montana, who harbours feelings for him and sees Remi as a threat to her own hopes of becoming his wife.
While “Remi & Nneoma” follows the familiar outline of the biblical story, it uses its contemporary setting to explore widowhood, grief, faith, and resilience in present-day Nigeria. It is a thoughtful reflection on loss, endurance, and the strength required to support another person, even in the face of unimaginable grief.
A timeless story with lasting relevance

The film honours the spirit of the Book of Ruth while grounding its themes in contemporary realities, allowing its characters to feel both familiar and deeply personal.
Anchored by heartfelt performances from Bisola Aiyeola and Liz Benson-Ameye, it invites audiences to reflect on the value of compassion, the strength found in community, and the courage it takes to move forward after devastating loss. “Remi & Nneoma” leaves viewers with a quiet but enduring reminder that even in life’s darkest seasons, hope is sustained through the people who choose to walk beside us.
