Built on familiarity rather than reinvention, “Oriadé” finds Davido leaning into the sound and themes that have defined his career.

To begin with, “Oriadé” is a bold title for an album. Loosely translated as “the head that wears the crown”, it carries the weight of legacy, responsibility and confidence. For Davido, it also signals an artist entering what he describes as his “crown era,” and the desire to return to a more African-rooted sound at a time when he felt Afrobeats was becoming increasingly focused on Western validation.

The regal artwork and the album’s title suggested a project with a clear sense of purpose. For an artist celebrating 15 years in music, “Oriadé” felt like more than another album. It felt like a moment of reflection.

That is exactly what Davido delivers.

Rather than chasing trends or trying to outdo the commercial success of his previous album, “Timeless”, he looks inward. Across 13 tracks, he returns to the themes that have always defined his music: love, faith, gratitude and the relationships that have carried him through different stages of his life.

It’s not an album trying to introduce a new version of Davido. Instead, it reminds listeners why the one they’ve known for the past 15 years has endured.

A 13-track  album built on consistency

“Oriadé” feels like the work of an artist who understands exactly who he is. Davido has explored different sounds throughout his career, but he has always returned to the melodic Afropop style that first made him a star. Here, those influences come together naturally. Nothing feels like it’s chasing a trend or forcing a crossover moment. Instead, Davido sticks to what he knows and makes it work.

“Already Falling,” already becoming a fan favourite, is one of the album’s strongest records. A possible follow-up to 2018’s “Assurance,” it is a heartfelt tribute to his wife and another reminder that vulnerability remains one of Davido’s greatest strengths as an artist. The percussion and melody capture the excitement of being deeply in love, making it easy to imagine the song becoming a staple at weddings in Nigeria.

“Amazing Grace,” featuring Black Sherif, is another standout. Black Sherif’s textured vocals sit beautifully alongside Davido’s, creating a love song that feels sincere from beginning to end.

Mayorkun reunites with Davido on “B4 B4,” alongside rising star FOLA, creating a vibrant Lagos anthem that bridges different generations of Afrobeats talent. “I Know Who I Be,” featuring JAZZWRLD and GL Ceejay, brings Afro-house and amapiano influences into the mix, delivering one of the album’s most audacious moments as Davido reflects on identity and self-belief.

Then there’s “Guide,” another highlight that blends emotion with melody without feeling overdone. The album closes with “My Light,” featuring Llona, a stripped-back record that slows the pace and gives “Oriadé” a thoughtful ending.

Familiarity without complacency

“Oriadé” is not without its limitations. If there’s one thing, it is that Davido rarely ventures beyond his comfort zone. 

Listeners hoping for the kind of bold experimentation that has shaped some of Afrobeats’ most exciting recent releases may find the album relatively safe. The production rarely surprises, and many of the melodies feel familiar to anyone who has followed Davido’s career long enough. Yet that familiarity is also the album’s greatest strength.

“Oriadé” is not trying to reinvent Afrobeats as many artists aspire to. It is a reminder of why Davido has remained one of the genre’s defining artists for over a decade. 15 years into his career, he no longer sounds like someone trying to prove he belongs at the top. He sounds like someone who knows he does.

Although that confidence doesn’t produce his strongest album, “Oriadé” succeeds because it knows exactly what it wants to be. Rather than chasing the next big moment, Davido focuses on the sound that has carried him this far. Sometimes consistency is its own kind of confidence.
