The BBC has announced the cast for its upcoming six-part thriller “Wahala”, and Nigerian screen icon Genevieve Nnaji is a part of it

If you loved Nikki May’s debut novel and have been waiting for the TV adaptation, just like me, then know that you are in for a ride. Filming has officially begun for “Wahala”, the upcoming BBC drama adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, and we’ve put together all you need to know about this film adaptation. 

The plot

Based on Nikki May’s bestselling novel, “Wahala”, a Yoruba word meaning trouble, the thriller centres on three lifelong best friends, Simi, Boo, and Ronke, navigating the messy, beautiful realities of their thirties in present-day London: careers, love, family, and the complicated ties that bind. However, everything shifts when Isobel, a magnetic and obscenely wealthy new acquaintance, sweeps into their orbit and turns it upside down. What begins as an exciting new friendship quickly curdles into something far more sinister. Tensions rise, loyalties crack, and long-buried secrets begin clawing their way to the surface.

The series weaves between London and the women’s childhood homes, where danger and mystery deepen, building toward consequences that are shocking and tragic. It also promises to honour the soul of the novel while expanding its world onto the big screen.

Get to know the all-star cast

Produced by BBC Studios and Firebird Pictures for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, the six-part thriller stars Adelayo Adedayo as Simi, Cush Jumbo as Boo, Susan Wokoma as Ronke, Deborah Ayorinde as Isobel, and Genevieve Nnaji, one of the most celebrated icons of Nigerian cinema. Her presence adds an extraordinary layer of cultural weight to the production. It is also worth knowing that this series marks Genevieve’s iconic return to the big screen after an eight-year hiatus. 

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, also shared that Theresa Ikoko’s scripts are “riveting, full of rich and complex characters” — and that the calibre of the cast speaks for itself.

When will “Wahala” be released?

An exact premiere date has not yet been officially announced, but it will stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One.
