I had to pick up Meet Me at Midnight by Brianna Bourne the moment I read the first sentence of the synopsis. If I Stay meets Taylor’s Midnights album? Sign me up. The story didn’t quite deliver on this comparison, but it was still enchanting. It was a beautifully written ode to teen daydreams of love and magic.

In Meet Me at Midnight, Aria and Strat meet in their dreams every night at midnight, but they are also real people living just miles from each other. So why are they connected in this way? This is where the story turns more like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind than If I Stay.

What I loved: Their dreams are the most picturesque and mesmerizing backdrops. As an adult, I would never want to leave these places, or, even more, insert any real life into the experience, but alas, Aria and Strat are full of hopes and dreams and have the energy to make them real. I think that’s what I enjoyed most about the book—it was in a POV that I am so far away and disconnected from, but it still hooked me. I also loved that the message of the book is about showing up authentically to the people we love and how you can only really love somebody with their layers. That lesson is ageless.

What I didn’t: Although Aria and Strat had layers, the characters around them didn’t. I would’ve loved to get to know her twin sister, who ends up having a huge part in the story, but we don’t find that out until the end. The intro and conclusion to the story felt a bit fast for me, but I also need to remind myself that this is a book written for young teens. I am not the demographic, and I still very much enjoyed it.

If you have a teen in your life who daydreams about being in love, I recommend Meet Me at Midnight by Brianna Bourne.
