The outfits, the aso ebi, the drama and the sheer spectacle. These four TV weddings gave us more than a love story.

Nigerian weddings rarely know how to be understated — even fictional ones. Give Nigerians a wedding, and we will turn it into a fashion show, family reunion, cultural exhibition and social event before the DJ plays her first song. The bride may be the star, but everyone else has a role to play too. The aunties have opinions, the guests have outfits to unveil, and somebody’s mother is probably keeping score of single men for her daughter.

That is part of what makes wedding scenes so enjoyable in Nigerian films. The couple may be at the centre, but there is usually much more happening around them.  Over the years, a few screen weddings have stayed with us for reasons that have little to do with whether the couple actually got their happily-ever-after. 

These are four of my favourite wedding moments from Nigerian films and TV.

“The Wedding Party”: the Nigerian society wedding as spectacle

Dunni and Dozie’s wedding gave us everything that makes a big Nigerian wedding much more than a ceremony. There was the elaborate décor, multiple outfit changes, coordinated aso ebi, bridal-party styling, live entertainment, celebrity guests and enough family politics to fill another film.

On paper, everything looked perfect, and that was precisely the point. The wedding was a carefully choreographed production where everyone had a role to play. The parents had appearances to maintain. Guests also had outfits to show off. The bridal party had to look the part. And the vendors had to fulfil their responsibilities with perfection. Then everything went spectacularly wrong.

Dunni discovers a woman’s underwear in Dozie’s jacket. The wedding video reveals an uncomfortable bachelor-party scene; Dunni leaves her reception. Then, somehow, the situation escalates into a hostage drama. The chaos is funny because the wedding itself remains so polished. Beneath the perfect décor and coordinated outfits is a family trying desperately to keep the day from falling apart.

“The Wedding Party” understood that the Nigerian society wedding is also a performance. Everyone is celebrating, but everyone is also representing themselves. And that is what made the wedding unforgettable.

“Namaste Wahala”: when Nollywood met Bollywood at the altar

If Nigerians are known for anything, it is our ability to make room for something new without completely letting go of what we already know. “Namaste Wahala” took that instinct to the altar. Didi and Raj’s wedding brought Nigerian and Indian traditions together with the ceremony, styling, music and dancing. Didi even traded the Nigerian bridal look for a lehenga and joined the Bollywood-style choreography, giving the celebration a distinctly Indian feel without losing its Nigerian setting. 

And really, Nigerians are already masters of this kind of cultural remixing.  We can have a traditional ceremony between different cultures, a white wedding, and a reception where the DJ moves from highlife to Fuji and Afrobeats without missing a beat. Add a foreign culture to the mix, and somehow, we will still find a way to make it an Owanbe.

That is what makes the wedding in “Namaste Wahala” memorable. It was a joyful cultural mash-up, bringing two families and their distinct traditions together in one celebration.

“The Wedding Party 2”: destination weddings, Nigerian style

For the sequel, the wedding moved to Dubai, but the Nigerian appetite for a big, elaborate celebration came along with it. “The Wedding Party 2” gave us a glimpse of the destination wedding experience at a time when the trend was gaining popularity among celebrities. We had seen lavish Nigerian weddings on screen before, but rarely one where the destination was such a central part of the experience. It showed us what happens when the wedding becomes the trip.

The wedding doubled as a getaway, with guests travelling, dressing up and making a few days of the celebration. It was the fantasy of the destination wedding, Nigerian edition. Yet beneath the glamour, the familiar things remained. There was still the traditional ceremony, elaborate dressing, family expectations and the very Nigerian instinct to turn one important occasion into an entire experience.

Because why have a wedding when you can have a wedding weekend? That shift says something about how weddings have evolved. The ceremony is still important, but so is the experience surrounding it.

“Isoken”: when the guests became part of the fashion show

Before “Isoken” became a story about marriage, family pressure and finding the right person, it gave us a very good reason to look at everybody’s outfit. The opening wedding is a visual celebration of Nigerian wedding culture, from the colourful aso ebi and elaborate gele to the traditional styling and Flavour’s Golibe setting the mood. But the fashion is only one part of why the scene works.

The female lead, Isoken, attends her younger sister’s wedding, but nobody can simply let her attend in peace. Her mother uses the occasion to worry about her unmarried daughter and introduce her to Osaze, the supposedly perfect Edo bachelor. Because in Nigeria, attending somebody else’s wedding can also become a reminder that your own wedding is apparently overdue.

The scene captures the social theatre surrounding Nigerian weddings. The couple may be getting married, but the event becomes a gathering point for family expectations, matchmaking, status and commentary about who is next.

Then there is the fashion: the aso ebi, the very stylish gele, and coordinated colours. At Nigerian weddings, dressing up is part of the fun. You are there to celebrate the couple, but you still have to look good doing it. Isoken captures that perfectly.

If nothing else, these weddings remind us that the couple is only one part of the Nigerian wedding story. The best wedding moments on screen are the ones that give us something to remember beyond the romance: the outfits, the culture, the family drama and the little details that make the celebration feel alive.
