Hair loss carries a heavy social stigma, but you have options. Explore the science, reality, and empowering choices behind hair restoration today.

There are a handful of things we notice when we first see people — their face, physique, and even their hair. Most importantly, we see their hairstyle, hairline, or lack of hair. It would be disingenuous to say society doesn’t gawk and scuff at people whose hair does not meet the beauty standards.

Bald people are often an easy target of ridicule, and since we are not in Biblical times, there will be no bears to punish you for mocking them. But Elisha, who once called upon God to curse 42 boys for teasing him for being bald, is not alone. One may philosophically argue about his actions and their morality. Nevertheless‌, he was hurt, and so are many afflicted by alopecia.

Alopecia, the medical term for any type of hair loss, comes in different forms. The most common versions: Androgenetic Alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, resulting in gradual thinning at the hairline or part line. Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune condition causing sudden hair loss on the scalp, face, or body. Traction Alopecia, which is hair loss caused by tight hairstyles like braids, cornrows, or ponytails that pull on the follicles. Lastly, Telogen Effluvium: Temporary, diffuse shedding triggered by severe physical or emotional stress, illness, or childbirth.

The location of the hair has made it inconceivable to hide this condition. There is the option of wigs, but a lifelong dedication to concealing one’s hair is not sustainable. For others, you accept the reality and join an embracing baldness community. But there’s the third secret option that only you can answer for yourself — what if I want my hair back?

Hair loss is not an isolated issue

While reports say that androgenic alopecia “affects about 80% of white men who are 70 or older,” the desire to restore one’s hair is neither modern nor Western. Julius Caesar developed an obsession with baldness while trying numerous methods to regrow his hair. But so did the ancient Egyptians, with there being a 5,000-year-old cure recipe indicating that blending the burned prickles of a hedgehog immersed in oil with honey, alabaster, red ochre and fingernail scrapings.

Beyond that, for a  Black person, hair has always been a political topic. Who decides what an acceptable or professional hairstyle is? And why is ‌ 4c hair never the answer? So, lots of us are accustomed to showing up for our hair through relaxing, strengthening, and protective hairstyles. Over time, these practices have left many of our strands weaker and more prone to damage. 

ScienceDirect expresses that “Chemical hair relaxers are associated with increased fragility of the hair shaft, allergic contact dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis.” Additionally, the site explains, “Hair relaxers also contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can be hormonally active and carcinogenic.”

Our protective hairstyles, like braids, frontal wigs, sleek ponytails, and cornrows with attachments, often pull at the edge of your hairline and weaken your strands. This is what causes “traction alopecia”. As Nihan Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of MC Turkish Hair Transplant and Therapy Clinic, notes, “This is genuinely one of our most common presentations, especially among our female clients — frontal and temple hair loss from years of tight styling.”

Moreover, several other factors, like excessive hair dyeing, can cause hair loss. Despite being a relatively common issue — and one that is often the subject of mockery — actively seeking medical treatment can be seen as excessive by some.

Speaking to David*, a 26-year-old whose hairline has been receding, he said, “I feel embarrassed wanting a cosmetic procedure. I also think I will feel uncomfortable if people keep asking me how my hair grew. But the truth is, I feel uncomfortable about my hairline.”

Additionally, Korie Onyinyechi Hannah, 32, who underwent a hair restoration at the MC Turkish Hair Transplant and Therapy Clinic in Nigeria, shares that the main catalyst was her emotional relationship. “My self-esteem was threatened not by anyone but myself. I love staring at the mirror anywhere I see one and love taking selfies, then one day I just couldn’t stare at the person whose reflection was me anymore. Who is that person staring back at me?”

She further says, “My confidence broke each time I tried to brush it off, my hairline was receding so much that even the lowest haircut couldn’t hide it anymore, and as someone who loves to wear her crown (hair) in all of its form and glory, I just couldn’t take it.”

However, she explains that while she is familiar with the stigma of undergoing a cosmetic procedure, it was not the case for her. “I felt no pressure whatsoever. If anything, I was encouraged by my loved ones, especially because Türkiye was brought right to our doorstep in Nigeria, with easy access to the facility any time, any day. Honestly, I didn’t feel that societal stigma people talk about; my circle was refreshingly supportive.”

Both David’s fears and Hannah’s experience are mirrors of our society. Their genders also play a huge part in their approach. For Hannah, it is understandable because Black women have a history of openly respecting and demanding that from us when it comes to hair. Examples of this include the state of California passing the “CROWN Act”, which prohibits discrimination based on hairstyle and hair texture in 2019. This policy shift aligns with the 2010s “big chop” movement, where many Black women transitioned to natural hair by cutting off chemically processed strands.

At the same time, physical augmentations have been socially associated with women. Recently, the internet mocked Brazilian footballer Vinícius Júnior, who played in the 2026 World Cup, for being spotted with a new jawline shortly after the tournament. He was equally a leading mention whenever people spoke of “ugly footballers” in past discussions. 

However, Nihan Haruna of MC Turkish Hair Transplant and Therapy Clinic, reassures men that post-procedure humiliation is not the case, saying, “Historically, men have made up the larger share [of clients], largely because male pattern baldness is more visibly discussed and destigmatised.”

She also notes, “But we’re seeing real growth in female clients, particularly around traction alopecia. Hair loss doesn’t discriminate — it’s more than men have had a longer runway of open conversation around solutions, and that gap is closing.”

What to know about getting a hair restoration procedure

Another question often asked is how these procedures are adaptable for Afro-textured hair. To which Nihan Haruna of MC Turkish Hair answers, “Afro-textured or tightly coiled hair has to be adapted from the standard: the curl of the hair follows the curl of the root beneath the skin, often at a sharp angle, so extraction requires more precision to avoid transection (damaging the follicle during removal).”

She also adds, “We use specialised punches suited to the follicle’s curvature and extract at a slower, more careful pace. Implantation is also adjusted so the natural curl direction and density pattern are respected, giving a result that blends naturally rather than looking artificially straight.”

Additionally, she highlights that a surgical procedure might not be ideal for all hair conditions, stating, “A good surgical candidate typically has a stable, healthy donor area (back and sides of the scalp), realistic expectations, and hair loss that has stabilised rather than being in an early, rapidly progressing stage.” 

“For those still in early or active shedding phases, we usually recommend starting with non-surgical options first to stabilise the hair loss — at MC, we offer PRP, mesotherapy, exosome therapy, and vitamin support. Surgery on an unstable head of hair can lead to a mismatched result down the line as surrounding native hair continues to thin,” she explains. “But it’s important to note: alopecia is fundamentally a skin condition, and it needs to be assessed and treated by a dermatologist first. Once the scalp condition is properly treated and the area is healthy, a transplant can then be successful. As long as the donor area is healthy, we see excellent outcomes — up to 99.9% procedure success — provided the client follows the aftercare instructions closely.”

Speaking to Korie Onyinyechi Hannah about her experience with hair restoration, she states, “From the consultation to the actual procedure day, to the follow-up, and even now, I got nothing short of professionalism from every single staff member.”

She also pointed out, “As someone with zero pain tolerance, however, I wasn’t ready for the level of pain it caused. The needle sticks to administer the anaesthesia were rough, and when it started wearing off, that was its own kind of unbearable. But hey, I survived.”

Post-procedure notes:

Hannah is currently in her post-procedure days. She says, “I’m only two months and seven days post-op, so the full results are still unfolding, but knowing I’ve done my part, I feel good about where things are headed. I’m hopeful it will all be worth it.”

While Haruna urges, “This window is everything for graft survival. Key factors: avoiding direct pressure or friction on the grafts, keeping the scalp clean per our washing protocol, avoiding sweat-heavy activity and direct sun exposure, sleeping in the recommended position to avoid dislodging grafts, and strictly avoiding scratching as scabs form. Patients who follow these instructions closely are the ones who get the best final results.”

Hannah reaffirms Haruna’s caution, saying, “The daily aftercare, which was washing my hair and so on, isn’t difficult at all. What actually challenged me was adjusting my lifestyle: sleeping in a certain position for the first few days, and cutting the spice out of my meals.”

Finally, Haruna also speaks on expectations and managing them, “We’re upfront early in the consultation. We walk patients through their actual donor supply, show them realistic before- and-afters of similar hair types and loss patterns, and explain that density builds in stages — you won’t see the full result until 10-12 months out. We’d rather set honest expectations at the start than have a disappointed client after the fact.”
