It’s the end of a long and challenging chapter for Gateway United FC, as the Ogun State-based club has officially been relegated to the third-tier Nigeria Nationwide League (NLO), drawing the curtain on their 15-season run in the Nigeria National League (NNL).
The club’s fate was sealed following a crushing 3-0 defeat to Godswill Akpabio FC on the final day of the season, marking a disappointing close to a turbulent campaign that saw them finish with just 6 wins, 5 draws, and 9 losses in 20 games.
This marks a significant downturn for a club once tipped to make a return to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Instead, Gateway United now faces the stark reality of life in the NLO — a division known more for development and rebuilding than for ambition and top-flight dreams.
Despite flashes of promise during the season, Gateway United struggled to find consistency both home and away, particularly in front of goal.
Their inability to convert chances and hold firm defensively saw them gradually slide into the relegation zone, a position they couldn’t escape as the season wore on.
Reactions from fans and stakeholders have been swift and emotional, with many expressing disappointment at the club’s gradual decline in recent years.
Calls for a complete overhaul — from management to coaching — have grown louder, as supporters seek answers and accountability.
The fall from the NNL does not only come with emotional implications but also threatens the financial and operational stability of the club, which now faces a tougher battle to maintain relevance and attract sponsorship in the less-visible third tier.
As Gateway United prepares for life in the NLO, attention will now shift to the decisions made in the off-season. Will the club rebuild with a focus on youth and development, or aim for an immediate return to the NNL.
