When the heart aches, let your hair do the healing
This is kind of a “speak for yourself” moment, but breakups are tough. Especially when they happen with a long-term partner, someone you’ve imagined spending the rest of your life with, only for it all to come crashing down.
For some people, things end amicably, and they remain friends. For many others, it doesn’t unfold so neatly, and the heartbreak often leaves behind a feeling of being a little lost. In that space, it’s not unusual to start craving big, visible changes in your life. More often than not, that change starts with their hair.
We’ve all heard of the big chop, breakup bangs, and other post-breakup hair transformations. Behind them is usually a desire to reclaim some sense of control. To take charge of something when everything else feels uncertain. Other times, it’s about starting fresh. It’s an “out with the old, in with the new” situation (yes, that’s a little Sharpay Evans reference) and a way of welcoming a new chapter.
Not that we’d want anyone to be going through a breakup, but if you are currently nursing a broken heart (so sorry, queen) and contemplating a dramatic hair change, we have some styles that might inspire you. Not because you have anything to prove to your ex, but because doing something for yourself can be a powerful way to begin again.
The moment is about you, your healing, your feelings and how you’d like to usher yourself into a brand-new era.

Break up bangs 2.0

Braids with beads and bangs with beads via Pinterest (original creator unknown). If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit You definitely want to spice things up, and what better way to do that than with beaded bangs? There’s a plethora of ways you could style your bangs, but the beads make all the difference. Make sure you go all out with your selection. Then you can have your breakup bangs after all, without the chop, of course.
Butterfly wing hair

Butterfly wing hair via Pinterest (original creator unknown). If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit We’re all for the whimsy in this new era, so a butterfly-winged hairstyle is a good way to go. Think of it as you flying whimsically into a new you (it helps better if you imagine yourself as an actual fairy).
Koroba braids

If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit Think of it as rolling up whatever attachment you have left for your previous partner and welcome a new era. Also, Koroba is just the cutest style ever, so you’ll be looking fab and ready to go regardless.
Faux locs

If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit Getting real locs might be a big commitment right now, and we don’t want to be getting into one of those again this early. So instead, faux locs make for the perfect in-between. You still get the look, the feel, and that instant switch-up in your appearance, without the permanence.
Bantu knots

You can wear them on natural hair or with braids, depending on the look you’re going for. The way they sit on the head frames the face beautifully, giving an instant lift and glow that feels just right for a fresh start.
Layered braids with beads

Layered braids with beads via Pinterest (original creator unknown). If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit The key here is to use as many and as colourful beads as you can. If there’s one thing that will lift your mood, it’s the sound of beads clinking as you move through your day. Also, between the compliments and the attention your hair will be getting, you’ll be too busy enjoying your new look to dwell on anything else.

Bubble braids

A voluminous sew-in

Sew in via Pinterest (original creator unknown). If this is your work, please contact us for proper credit We all know that extensions have become a huge part of a Black girl’s hair routine, so knock yourself out. Get a sew-in, I mean the dramatic styles. If you want, go for layered, ginger, blonde, bob, pixie cut. Nothing makes a girl happy like a new hair install.

Sculptured hairstyles

Lydia Adeyemi via @lydiaadeyemi_ on Instagram Sculptural hairstyles are proof that hair can be art. With thread, wire, and intentional shaping, these looks transform everyday styling into something truly creative. Have fun with your hair. A little thread here, a bit of wire there, some intentional sculpting and suddenly you’ve got art sitting right on your head. It’s all the flavour you need to bring that spark right back.
Your soft reset starts here
There you have it. You can save these styles whether you’re currently nursing a broken heart or simply looking for a change. A new hairstyle may not magically erase the memories or answer all your questions, but it can be a fun reminder that life keeps moving forward. Sometimes, all it takes is a fresh look to help you step into a new chapter feeling a little lighter, a little bolder, and a lot more like yourself.
