Looking back at “The Odyssey” press tour, one thing stood out: the clean beauty looks.
“The Odyssey” is officially in cinemas, and many movie lovers have likely already seen it. After grossing ₦215 million in its first week in Nigerian cinemas, the film became the fifth-biggest Hollywood release in the West African market. While the movie continues to rack up accolades, we’re still stuck on the makeup looks the women of “The Odyssey” served during their press tour.
The fashion, as we all witnessed, was nothing short of unforgettable. From Zendaya to Lupita, the cast brought their characters to life on the runway through method dressing. The beauty looks were equally captivating, with one of Zendaya’s makeup moments sending the internet into a frenzy.
The makeup style behind all this love, though, was the polarising “clean girl” aesthetic and its counterpart, the no-makeup makeup look. As an advocate of full glam and bold makeup, clean girl looks are kept for my lazy days. However, the looks we saw from The Odyssey press tour made me reconsider that perhaps, just maybe, I could learn to love it as much.

Zendaya
Zendaya via @ernestocasillas on Instagram Zendaya and her makeup artist, Ernesto Casillas, served look after look throughout “The Odyssey” press tour. You had no choice but to appreciate the artistry of a makeup artist who knows their craft amazingly well. Out of all the looks, though, we have to mention the one that truly broke the internet — the New York premiere. I might be biased, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen makeup sit on someone’s face so naturally before.
Her skin looked sun-kissed, as though she had just woken up by the beach. Yet, her cheeks and nose were so flushed, as though she had been sitting in the cold for a while. The simple look was finished with a glowy highlight that accentuated the high points of her face, while her lips were kept simple with nothing more than a lip balm that matched her blush.
The allure of the look lay in its simplicity, and that’s precisely what made people drawn to its beauty. Paired with her hair, which had a rough, natural, wind-swept wave to it, the entire look came together with such ease. Unsurprisingly, beauty enthusiasts wasted no time recreating the look and seeking products used to achieve it. Dare I say, one of the best makeup looks of the year.
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway via @hungvanngo on Instagram Pregnancy has never looked better on a person than it does on Anne Hathaway. After debuting her baby bump shortly before the press tour began, Hathaway made her rounds in beautiful looks that accentuated it. Her face couldn’t have been glowing any more.
At “The Odyssey” photocall in London, Hathaway also channelled the clean girl makeup aesthetic with a classic soft-glam look. The makeup done by Hung Vanngo beautifully accentuated her natural features using soft, neutral tones. A subtle touch of pink blush was swept onto her cheeks, giving her face a youthful flush. And her skin was finished with a base that still allowed for a soft, radiant glow.
Her eyes were where you could notice a bit more makeup, though it didn’t take away from the overall minimal look. They were defined using neutral, earthy shades, with soft brown blended across her lids. Her eyebrows were groomed to maintain their natural arch. The look was completed with a rosy nude lipstick that closely mimicked her natural lip colour.
Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron via @kateleemakeup on Instagram For “The Odyssey” premiere in Paris, Charlize Theron, with the help of her makeup artist Kate Lee, wore a variation of the natural look. While it leaned less towards the no-makeup makeup look, it still embraced the clean-girl aesthetic.
Her makeup consisted of neutral products and soft nude tones across the whole face. For her eye makeup, she wore soft, natural shades with subtle eyeliner. Her cheeks had little to no blush, but a visible contour, further leaning into the natural look. Her lips were finished with a nude touch.
Overall, it’s clear that makeup was used, yet it still embodied minimal glam and looked remarkable, complementing her Dior gown and jewellery beautifully.

Mia Goth
Mia Goth via @ninapark on Instagram At the world premiere in London, Mia Goth showcased a minimal makeup look. Her blush was the standout feature, with her rosy cheeks looking every bit natural. Her pouty lips matched her cheeks in the same rosy pink shade, tying the colour palette together beautifully.
Her face still had a soft glow, attributed to the glow stick and mist used by Goth’s makeup artist, Nina Park, which let her skin retain that natural, dewy shine. Her skin remained slightly visible, perfectly embodying the no-makeup makeup aesthetic. For her eyes, she wore neutral eyeshadow, while her cheekbones were finished off with a subtle shimmery highlight.
A new appreciation for clean girl makeup
For those times when you’re not feeling full glam, or for those fleeting moments when you want something more understated, clean girl makeup can be a lifesaver. The women of “The Odyssey” have certainly given us a new appreciation for the clean girl aesthetic and soft glam.
While people often think clean girl makeup doesn’t take much effort, that’s far from the truth. It still requires time, precision, and the right techniques and products to create a look so seamless it appears almost effortless. As we’ve seen throughout “The Odyssey” press tour, the makeup artists behind these looks have truly mastered the craft.
So, if you’re looking for beauty inspiration this summer, take a cue from the women of “The Odyssey”. Whether you’re heading off on holiday or simply want to embrace a lighter approach to makeup, these looks won’t steer you wrong. They prove that understated makeup can be just as striking as a full-glam look when it’s done well.
