A collage that showcases various ways to style silk scarves, highlighting their versatility as hair accessories, headwear, or even converted into bags

Effortlessly elegant and endlessly adaptable, the scarf has earned its place as one of the hardest-working accessories in any wardrobe.

Scarves are like the ultimate fashion secret weapon. When an outfit just isn’t working, pop a scarf on, and your look will be ten times better. Here in Nigeria, and also in Africa as a whole, headgear is already an important part of our cultures. Different cultures use them for different occasions and religions, like Christians who tie their heads for church or Muslims who wrap their heads in a hijab. Even down to tradition, where the Yorubas have their gele and the Igbos have their ịchafụ. Not necessarily scarves per se, but headwraps have always been a part of our culture, meaning scarves fit just right in.

The scarf’s versatility is probably one of the main reasons it is so highly favoured. Due to its flow and drape, as well as its width and size, it gives people maximum freedom to create whatever they want, however they want.

Perfect for summer, it’s no wonder it’s on the rise again. As people travel, they know that if there’s one thing they need, it’ll be a scarf for every occasion.

The runway’s enduring love affair with scarves

Last year, during the showcase of the spring/summer 2026 shows, brands made heavy use of scarves, backing the massive surge we’re seeing now.

During Paris Fashion Week last year, Hermès draped scarves around the models’ necks and also on the bags, complementing the outfits.

Celine also made use of scarves, both silk and wool, turning them into accessories to elevate each piece. Dries Van Noten’s menswear spring/summer 2026 collection featured vibrant silk scarves knotted at the waist as pareos over trousers.

More recently, Jacquemus gave audiences a taste of SS27 with their summer collection, where knotted headscarves emerged as one of the standout styling details.

The runways are never going to stop embracing scarves, especially during the spring/summer seasons. So, now that you know why they’re worth having, let’s get into the fun part: how to style them

    The ultimate scarf style guide

One of the best things about scarves is just how many ways there are to wear them. These days, content creators and influencers are having a field day with styling videos, and I, for one, can’t seem to stop watching them. So, if you’ve been looking for ways to wear your scarves, you’ve come to the right place.

    Adorning your head

The headscarf is perhaps the most iconic way to wear a scarf. Beyond looking stylish, it serves several practical purposes too. Whether you just want to have a stylish moment, you have not braided your hair and want to hide what’s underneath, or you want to protect yourself from the sun, it can be used for various things.

    As a bag

Scarves come in different sizes, shapes, and widths. This gives you ample edge space to fold and create a bag out of your own trusty scarf. To create one, just pick up the four edges, ensure there are no gaps, secure them well at the top, and add a strap that you can hang on your shoulder or hold in your hand.

    As a top

Turning your scarf into a top is easy, reliable, and many tutorials on the internet show you how to do it. With just a single scarf, you can create various styles like an inverted top, a halter top, a crop top, a shawl with a belt, among many more. No matter how you twist and turn, it always ends up looking beautiful.

    Around your neck

Perhaps also the most common way of using scarves. They always add a pop of colour and vibrancy when you use them as neckties. You can drape them as the formal necktie, a bow, simply tied around your collar, as a choker or necklace. Having one around your neck makes it the focal point of your look.

    As a belt

Don’t want to be regular and use a belt? Slip your pretty scarf through your belt loops, and you have the prettiest belt for whatever pair of pants you want to wear out. Match your scarf to your trousers or top and create a unique look.

    As a bag accessory

Alongside making actual scarf bags, you can use them only as accessories for your bag. They help take a somewhat simple-looking bag and give it an accent that’s sure to catch people’s attention.

There are plenty of ways to style a scarf on your bag. Wrap it around the handle, tie it into a bow, braid it, wear it crossbody, or even use it as a belt; the possibilities are endless.

As a skirt, sarong or pareo

If you’re looking for a way to spice things up even more, wrapping your scarves as skirts or pareos is a suitable option. A pareo or sarong is a wrap that is commonly worn to the beach over swimwear

If you want to wear it as an everyday item, you still can. Just be sure to wear sturdy bottoms underneath since most scarves are lightweight. But for the beach or a swim day, just tie it well around your swimsuit, and you’re complete.

    As a hair tie

We all know girls love using anything other than regular hair ties to put their hair up, whether it’s a shoelace, ribbon, or even their hair. A pretty silk scarf gives you the same grip but with a much more aesthetic finish.

The timeless appeal of the scarf

Today, wardrobes are built around versatility, and few accessories embody that better than the scarf. Effortlessly adaptable, it transforms with every wear — so much so that it’s difficult to ask: what can’t it do?

It enhances simple outfits and accessories, becoming the fashion item for all. Due to its practicality, the rise is probably going to continue for as long as it can. With countless ways to mix up the styles, there’s no one way to wear a scarf, and that’s what makes it whimsical, unique, and very convenient.

Now it’s time to grab your scarf (the bigger, the better), get creative in front of the mirror, and discover just how many ways you can wear it.
